Baltimore County (MD) Fire Department to Embed Human Performance Specialist

Partners With O2X Human Performance To Optimize Health and Wellness

Baltimore County, MD – Beginning in August 2023, the Baltimore County Fire Department (BCoFD) will launch a new comprehensive wellness program to address career longevity and occupational performance. Along with frequent mental and physical performance-focused training, the program includes a full-time Human Performance Specialist, embedded at the department, to help firefighters train properly and stay healthy.

The program is provided by O2X Human Performance, a Massachusetts-based training and education company. O2X works with thousands of first responders and has designed programs for federal, state, and local agencies nationwide. O2X provides state-of-the-art training and education aimed specifically at helping tactical athletes finish their careers as strong as they started.

“The health and safety of our personnel is a top priority,” said BCoFD Fire Chief Joanne R. Rund. “Our ability to serve and fulfill the arduous demands of the job depends on our physical and mental fitness. The partnership with O2X will help ensure that our personnel enjoy long, productive careers in the Fire Service.”

As tactical athletes, first responders risk their lives daily to keep their communities safe. They endure physical and mental stress throughout their careers that can have acute and cumulative impacts to health. BCoFD has taken an important step in mitigating these occupational hazards by partnering with O2X. Through this partnership, BCoFD will launch the O2X Integrated Specialist Program (ISP) to lead the implementation of the O2X curriculum.

An O2X On-Site Specialist (OSS) will lead the ISP. The OSS will utilize education and personal experience, as well as the greater resources of the entire O2X Human Performance network, to design and implement training programs that prepare tactical athletes for the rigors of their professions. These experts incorporate elements of conditioning, injury prevention, nutrition, fatigue management and sleep science, stress mitigation, sports psychology, and resilience into the lifestyles of agency personnel.

“O2X is thrilled to start the Integrated Specialist Program with the Baltimore County Fire Department.” said Adam La Reau, Co-founder at O2X Human Performance. “This partnership marks another milestone in our mission to enhance the performance and well-being of first responders. Together, we will empower these brave individuals to not only protect and serve their communities but also prioritize their own physical and mental health.”
